Nearly Half of Lee County Households Are Working Hard Toward Stability

Out of 74,799 households in Lee County, 47% are striving every day to afford life’s essentials. These families are doing their best to make ends meet and represent the resilience and determination that fuel our community. By understanding their challenges, we have a powerful opportunity to come together, support one another, and build a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone.

Meet ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed

ALICE represents thousands of hardworking Alabamians who are vital to the strength of our communities. They are childcare providers, healthcare workers, retail staff, infrastructure professionals, and more—people we rely on every day. ALICE is working, contributing, and striving, yet still faces financial challenges due to rising living costs and stagnant wages.

The ALICE Report shines a light on these households—those who earn above the Federal Poverty Level but still fall short of what’s needed to afford life’s basic necessities. It offers a clear, data-driven picture of financial hardship in every Alabama county.

By sharing the ALICE Report, our goal is to elevate the stories behind the numbers. We aim to raise awareness, foster solutions, and help ensure ALICE is seen, supported, and empowered. With better understanding, we can work together—policymakers, community partners, employers, and neighbors—to create lasting change and greater opportunity for all.

Because when ALICE thrives, we all thrive.
